No 9. The Lowdown on Lip Tattoos: What to Expect and How They Work!

Hey there! Today, I want to talk to you about lip tattoos – what they are, how they work, and what to expect during the process.

First off, let’s start with the basics: a lip tattoo is a type of permanent makeup that involves depositing pigment into the lips to enhance their natural colour and shape. The process is also known as lip blush or lip tint, it can be used to create a natural-looking lip colour, define the lip shape, and even out uneven pigmentation. Here is a great example of what to expect from the whole process.
So, how does the process work? Lip tattoos involve using a small, handheld machine to deposit pigment into the lips. The machine uses a needle to puncture the skin, delivering tiny droplets of ink into the dermis layer of the skin.

The ink blends with the natural lip colour to create a more vibrant and defined look.

The process starts with a consultation with a professional permanent makeup artist. (Hopefully me) During the consultation, you will discuss your desired outcome and choose a colour that best matches your skin tone and lip colour. You will also be advised on how to prepare for the procedure, such as avoiding alcohol and caffeine for a few days beforehand to minimise bleeding.
On the day of the procedure, a numbing cream will be applied to the lips to minimise any discomfort. The permanent makeup artist will then begin the process of depositing the ink into the lips.

The procedure can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the complexity of the design and the technique used.

The colour will appear very vibrant and bright at first, but it is important to know this is not the healed result. The colour will fade by about 30 to 50% about 1-2 weeks after your first treatment, sometimes more and for a time it will look like it has faded completely as the skin thickens healing itself it can camouflage the colour, but it will come back and by 6 weeks you should see the fully healed result which will be a mix of your colour choice and your natural lip colour, giving a tinted look.

You will then go back for a top up, to either add more colour, or amend the colour slightly should you desire and the same healing process will happen. So its around 12 weeks before you see the final fabulous results.

Now, let’s talk about what is happening biologically during the process. When the needle punctures the skin, it creates small wounds that trigger the body’s natural healing response. The immune system sends white blood cells to the area to repair the damage, and in doing so, the pigment particles become trapped within the dermis layer of the skin. Over time, the ink will settle into the skin and blend with the natural lip colour.
After the procedure, it’s important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by the permanent makeup artist. This may include avoiding certain foods and beverages, applying ointment to the lips to keep them moisturised, and avoiding excessive sun exposure.
So, what can you expect in terms of results? Lip tattoos typically last 2-5 years, depending on the colour, technique, and aftercare. Over time, the ink will gradually fade and may require touch-ups to maintain the desired look. It’s important to choose a professional permanent makeup artist who uses high-quality pigments and tools to ensure the best results.
In conclusion, lip tattoos are a great option for those who want to enhance their natural lip colour and shape. The process involves depositing ink into the lips using a handheld machine, and the results can last for several years. It’s important to choose a reputable professional who uses high-quality materials and follows proper safety and hygiene protocols. With a little research and the right technique, you too can have the perfect pout!
